Dubai’s Museum of the Future and Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium opt for Sherwin-Williams protection
The iconic Museum of the Future in Dubai chose Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings to provide a fire protection coating solution for its breathtaking structure.

Innovative fire protection solutions

The challenge for the company’s fire protection experts was the museum’s remarkable design, a joint-free assembly of 890 unique stainless steel and fibreglass fused panels fabricated using methods borrowed from the aviation industry. Sherwin-Williams technical experts selected the Phoenix 370-120H water-based intumescent coating rated for 120-minutes fire protection to apply on the museum structure. The fabricator was Eversendai.

“For specifiers, architects, developers and applicators, this is game-changing. Our comprehensive range of products and the substantial advances we have made in intumescent coating technology are delivering significant protection and operational benefits and options to our customers,” said Roger Williams, Market Director-Firetex, EMEAI & APAC at Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine.

“Having strengthened the Sherwin-Williams network across the Middle East and Asia Pacific through last year’s acquisition of Phoenix, we are able to leverage our world-class technical expertise and global presence to offer more bespoke solutions to these regions than ever before.”

Since Sherwin-Williams acquired Phoenix Fire Protection Group a year ago, its offices in Dubai and Hong Kong have been fully integrated into the organisation to offer the full range of products including corrosion protection coatings, tank linings, resin flooring, pipeline solutions and the Firetex range of passive fire protection intumescent coatings.

The specialist range of Firetex intumescent and insulation materials has been protecting assets worldwide for more than 15 years, with added visual appeal reflected in the finished building.

Sherwin-Williams fire protection coatings also come with the support of software including bespoke Fire Design Estimator (FDE) 2.0 which enables accurate calculations of coatings properties for complex projects.

State-of-the-art stadium protection

Sherwin-Williams coatings were also chosen for the fire protection of steelwork at Tottenham Hotspur’s new showpiece stadium where up to 62,000 fans will be seated for the club’s home games. Having examined the priorities to protect the steel structure in the event of a fire with such large numbers of people moving about, Sherwin-Williams experts selected Firetex C69 Epoxy blast primer, followed by Firetex FX2003 solvent-based intumescent coating with a top coat of Acrolon C237 acrylic urethane sheen finish.

The Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy C123 coating was used for the surface below the second synthetic pitch, achieving low curing down to 5°C. The coating is easy to apply by airless spray; compatible with a wide range of Macropoxy, zinc clad epoxy primers and build coats; and compliant with Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) standards. The steel fabricator for the project was Severfield.

“This project demanded the highest specification standards for stadia using only the best products. We’re proud to have been involved to ensure only the highest levels of fire protection measures are in place where the lives of people and the safety of property are at stake,” said Mark Lockhart, Sherwin-Williams UK Sales Manager.

Macropoxy C400V3 epoxy zinc phosphate coating was selected and applied after blast cleaning of the terrace steelwork, a system suitable for the protection of steelwork in a range of exposure environments from C1 to C5 as defined in ISO12944, including buildings, car parks, petrochemical plants, breweries and power stations.

Some other projects using fire and corrosion protection coatings delivered by Sherwin-Williams across EMEAI include:

  • The Shard, London
  • Flame Towers, Azerbaijan
  • Leadenhall Building (aka “The Cheesegrater”)
